One suggestion regarding pulling apart & reconnecting elbows/ risers to rubber connectors:

Try prying the rubber up a bit all the way around and using a BIG flathead screwdriver (or other implement that won't tear the rubber) & squirting a little super lubricant like Astro Glide between the rubber & metal. Worked great for me. Also made putting the top & bottom halves of an OMC Cobra outdrive back together relatively easy. Without the lube I was pushing & twisting with my entire body weight & still wasn't getting there. After putting some AstroGlide on the rubber, the drive slipped together like a knife through hot butter.

Wouldn't think there'd be any risk with using this. AstroGlide is a water based "personal lubrication" product available at the drugstore. If it's safe for use with condoms, seems like it shouldn't cause any damage to rubbers (ouch, sorry about the pun...).

How you explain it might depend on who your helper is. Could be difficult if you have a cute young female assistant. On the other hand, think about the possible implications if your helper is a fat, unshaved neighbor who proudly displays the traditional plumbers butt crack. (actually, don't think about the implications of that second scenario; it's too frightening, lol).
