My outboard calls for Champion plugs and when I called around for the ones recommended they didnt have Champion but did have them in NGK. Being rather new with outboard motors I have heard from some that the motors dont run as good unless you use the Champions. Just seeing if I should be fine with the NGK's. Thanks

Re: spark plugs

Depends on what motor you have. Most carb'd 2 stroke OMC / BRP outboards are designed to run Champions. The equilivent NGK can sometimes actually burn hotter which isn't good (pistons don't like that). Some folks do run NGK plugs but have richened up the motor to compensate for the higher combustion temps. Just run the right plugs to be safe.

Re: spark plugs

What outboard, exactly, do you have, dcata??

Your question is far, far too vague.

I have a 93 115hp Johnson V4. I will probably stick with the champion plugs. But if anyone has any good advice im always open to suggestions.

Re: spark plugs

dcata, I am a mechanic. I have been working on engines since the late 60s. I have racing experience and two stroke experience. Unless your willing to spend a lot of time testing and comparing with the risk of damaging an engine in the process, use what the manufacturer recommended. Champion is it on the Johnson, you can depend on good performance from them.
I use a lot of NGKs in BMWs and they are an excellent plug. I won't use Champions in the same application because I have seen the problems that they cause in that application. Just an example of the other way around.

Re: spark plugs

Thanks for the info. I finally found someone in town here that has the champion plugs and plan on getting some today. I would rather run these than burn a hole in a piston.

Re: spark plugs

I have always used the recommended plugs. There are many threads out here on the subject with varying opinions. My thoughts are that if that is what the manufacturer calls out for then that is what you should use.
