I have a 05 Four Winns 234 Funship with a 350 MPI, how often should the plugs be changed ? At 18.50 a pop from my tech. it seems a little pricey. Thanks for any inputs.

Re: spark plugs

My 5.3 chev truck book sez after 125,000 miles, I now have 106,000 and that is 3080 hours.

So I would say you could go a 1000 hrs or so.

Re: spark plugs

Depends on what plugs it uses.
The Chevy truck plugs are platinum tip and yes they say 100,000 miles..

The AC Marine plugs are not platinum plugs.
You can get the AC MR43T at Rockauto.com for under 3 bucks each.
They are the marine plugs and probably the exact plugs the dealer is telling you are 18 bucks each.

Re: spark plugs

I just changed the plugs in my 2003 MPI for the first time because the last time we were out I felt a tiny miss until the engine warmed up good. Had just under 250 hours on them. They still looked brand new.

You don't have to buy the plugs from a marine outlet. Factory plug for your engine is the AC 41-993 (per this Merc bulletin, the 993 is the equivelent replacement for the 932):

You can buy them for $19.30 EACH at a typical marine outlet like this:

Or you can get them at an auto parts house like Auto Zone for $6.49 each. Your choice.

Re: spark plugs

Thanks for the input guys. I did a little research and the price is correct. They are platinum tip, copper core and should be good for 300 hours. I guess my mechanic "upgraded" me from the stock plugs. I had 105 hours when service was done so I'll keep track of plug life. Thanks Again

Re: spark plugs

Platinum plugs at an auto parts house are $6-$7. The Iridium plugs are a little more expensive. Do you know what plugs he put in? May be a little more reasonable to get them yourself next time .....
