I have 5.0 litre mercruiser inboard thats due a half service, the question i have is the engineer says that my spark plugs should be renewed,is this true when they are only no more than 8 hrs max.

Re: spark plugs

What the heck is a half service? Never heard of such a thing.

Re: spark plugs

by "renewed" I'm guessing you mean replaced.

If they look worn (or completely the wrong ones in my case), then they should be replaced especially if they have a poor spark.

Otherwise, I don't see a need. But thats just my opinion...

Good luck

Re: spark plugs

By half a service I can only guess he want's to alternate between the odd and even cylinders.
Interesting approach to maintainence.

Re: spark plugs

my question again, is renewing of spark plugs necessary every time i have a service, when the engine has a only been used about 8hrs over a period of 6 weeks last summer.

Re: spark plugs

Spark plugs a month or so old? No need to change them with 8 hours on them.
Is there a problem? Does it run bad?

Re: spark plugs

Thanks Gary, the problem is my boat is been looked after by an agent in Majorca Europe, and I live in England so you see my dilemma is I have to try and trust other people to do a good job on maintaining my boat ,to ensure my families safety, when I go out to sea, if your car breaks down on the motorway at least you can get out and walk to safety, A boat you cant:)
I know that if it was my old car i would take out my spark plugs check them over brush them up and set the gaps with some gauges,or replace if damaged, but i dont know where these plugs are on my 5.0 litre mercruiser, in fact where are they.
Regards Thomasfp

Also regarding my mercruiser engine ,its well maintained by mercruiser engineers.

Re: spark plugs

I guess by 'half service' you mean a 6 month/50 hour, not an annual/100 hour.

Spark plugs are good for about 200+ hours, and shouldn't need replacing after only 8 hours run time. If they do, you have another problem that needs to be looked at.
