When performing a spark test I get a thin white spark arc across a spark tester set to a 7/16 inch gap on all 3 cylinders. Should I be seeing something more than this? I read somewhere a wide blue arc.

1982 70HP 3Cyl 2Carb. with WOT problem.

Thanks

Re: Spark Test Question

You can have a great spark cranking and at idle and still not have enough spark for WOT operation,

OR,

you could have a fuel problem, low compression, incorrect timing.........

The 7/16 inch spark test is a good starting point, that your spark is NOT a hot blue arc is cause for further testing, just to be sure that you are on the right track.

You need the Outboard Ignition Troubleshooting Guide, look up your model, and follow the directions to the T

The FREE guide is posted somewhere here on iboats, also can be found using links at rapair.com

You will need a DVA Meter to reliably test voltage outputs. Ohms values are given but DVA is a very telling guage of ignition performance.

DO NOT assume any component is bad without PROVING it bad, there is NO RETURN.................
