It's that SIMPLE

My .02

Before you call me a racist I'm only talking about people living here in the USA.

I'm tired of being asked for English "press one"
Thats how (even though I don't agree with them) the Roman Empire fell!

Rant over! :)

Link, do as I do. Absolutely every time I call a company that requires me to press one to speak english, my first order of business is to register a complaint and demand that they send it up the pipeline.

I did this for several year with Verizon Wireless. You call them now, they greet you in English, give a short blurb in espanol telling them to press a number, then they go on with your menu choices in english.

If enough people complain often enough, these companies will change.

What gets my blood pressure up is when some clerk tries to tell me this is a bilingual country or that half the population speaks spanish. If they give me any crap, I immediately ask for a supervisor.

And the supervisor has such a heavy accent you can't make out a word.

Can't live with them, can't shoot them... although the temptation is there.

Re: Speak English

When I spent summers as a boy in north NJ, many of my Grandma's neighbors spoke Italian, Yiddish or Polish in their family homes and over the back fence, English when in public. Grandma, who was born and grew up in Brooklyn, was fluent in Italian.

My girls were fluent in German when my MIL lived with us because Oma would not speak English except in public (and very little then). She was not fluent and usually used the girls as interpreters.

Some of my neighbors speak Spanish at home and among Hispanics, English to me.

That is where I am coming from when I say no law requires them to converse in English. To become citizens they must demonstrate the ABILITY to do so, but that is about it.

This country was conquered from the natives and built by people who spoke many languages. Most immigrants came here unable to speak English. Over time they assimilated. It will always be so.

If your hostility is about illegal entry, focus on illegal entry. Language is not any more of a problem than it was when Eastern European and Mediterranian immigrants flooded our country.

The problem I see is: Who is coming into our country, how, why, and do they have clearance to do so?

Mohammad Atta spoke fluent English.

That is MY beef.

However, confused languages will have no fruit.

Re: Speak English

Many years ago, my father (mhrip) worked for a large aerospace company in Burbank, California. The company was a U.S. Gov't contractor so everyone had to be a U.S. Citizen. During the day many of the Hispanic employees would converse in Spanish. One day, my father got pi$$ed, so he and a co-worker who was also Jewish, started jabbering in what sounded like Yiddish. First one then the other making it sound like they were talking to each other (much like Sid Caesar and his "languages.") After lunch, one of the Hispancic workers came over to my father and told him that speaking a foreign language around people who didn't understand that language was being rude. My father, in no uncertain terms, asked him, "Since when is Spanish the language of America?" And, "How rude are all of the other co-workers to be speaking Spanish?" The man's jaw just dropped open.... He hadn't realized what they had been doing until my father showed them their evil ways. The man appologized to my father and from that point on, English was spoken in the shop.

Re: Speak English

Things will improve. Notice that even Klingons serving in Star Fleet all are required to speak Engish. No bi-lingo crap on the Enterprize.
