Re: speakers

Always go for the Marine Brand equipment.

Techinically speaking they may do the job however, Marine Brand will last a lot longer and specifically designed for the environment.

Re: speakers

I’m looking into this stuff, too. I think it depends on the boat design (open cockpit or enclosed?) and the regional environment/humidity. The marine radio stuff definitely has better designed faceplates to protect against splash but that’s not he only thing that can get your electronics. The speakers I wouldn’t mess with ... I’m only looking at the marine grade stuff.

Re: speakers

If you can find a set of car speakers that use plastic frames and non-paper (like polypropelene, etc) cone material you will be fine. In fresh water and with the speakers protected even normal speakers will last you a good time. Salt, you want all plastic, no paper or metal.

Re: speakers

I use marine poly planar stereo and speakers. A little expensive but they will last a long time. I beleive Pioneer makes the best sounding marine speakers, without a doubt

Do you think they sound better than the Bose speakers? I haven't heard the Bose yet but man they are expensive.

Bose do sound good but are overpriced, do a google and you will find other brands that sould just as good without the Price Tag.

You could do a google on "are bose overpriced" :)

Re: speakers

Hi,
Speakers:
I recommend marine speakers.
I use Sony XS-MP61, they are OK, the more expensive XS-MP62 speakers are also available.
To cover my stereo I use Sony GMD-616.
http://www.xplodsony.com/products/?CATEGORY=Marine

The stereo (radio/CD/MP3) is also a Sony (like a CDX-R3300 but a little older model).
http://www.xplodsony.com/products/?CATEGORY=CD

In the winter I just take the stereo out from the boat and store it inside the house.

Re: speakers

To me the marine pioneer speakers are the best sounding and the price is fair. We had several boats at the islands this summer and the smallest boat had pioneers. Basicaly same powered radios and his boat had the best sound. I had JBL's and polyplanars - no comparison.

Re: speakers

I have a pair of Bose 131 speakers now and am adding the 151 series this winter. Yes they are pricey, but between the awesome sound and the 3 year warranty, I find them well worth the price. I tried to use auto grade speakers last season and they made it through 2 weekend outings. Definitely stay with the Marine version speakers, as well as the rest of your Stereo equipment.

Re: speakers

I vote for regular ol auto speakers. I was told by a professional car stereo shop to, as Steve Huminiski previously said, just make sure you use ones with non papaer cones. Before you install them, he said to lightly spray them with some type of silicone water repellent, like camp dry or something. He said that's all they ever do for boats.

Re: speakers

auto equipment has worked fine in my boat for over 3 years and that's with plenty of wet wakeboarders splashing around....fresh water only.

polypropolene cones as has been said before. if you're talking about 6 1/2 inch speakers then alpine, infinity, focal if you're more of an audiophile. i've had the bose 151's and while nothing beats them for surviving the elements, they didn't sound very good.

etronics.com and ikesound.com have some of the best online prices and ship quickly.

Re: speakers

I have some polk audio poly cone speakers. they are set low on the sides and get hit with hoses, and detergent and the like all the time. Going on three years and sound incredible. I don't expect them to last forever but so far so good.

FYI, my experience reflects freshwater use only...

Re: speakers

I also use auto speakers in my little runabout. Sprayed with CampDry/silicone like Sangewaker said above. Does your vessel live in a slip or in your yard? That makes a difference as well.I boat in saltwater 95% of the time and trailer all the time. I don't think my speakers would have survived in a 24/7 saltwater enviroment.

Dave

Re: speakers

I use car speakers in my boat and have never had any problems with them. The marine speakers cost about three times as much and the car speakers sound better. For what you pay for one set of marine speakers you can buy a better set of regular speakers and still have money in your pocket. The ones in my boat have three years on them and still sound good.

I have kids that wakeboard, ski, and tube so they get their share of water splashed on them.

Re: speakers

I was thinking about putting a stero system in my boat(it is all set up for one). I was just wondering if the Arizona heat will destroy the speakers or the stero thingy itself. The boat is parked outside and always covered. It can get really hot under that cover (outside summer temps are around 100-115+ degrees F.). Sorry not trying to hijack the post just wondering.

Re: speakers

car stereos survive in cars out there don't they? Car interiors can get up to 140 degrees in just a few minutes in the sun. That's way more than on open boat will ever see.
