Hello all,

I have a 1997 90hp V4 Johnson. Just purchased a water pump servicing kit that comes with the impeller, housing, o-rings, etc. In reading the service manual the service manual calls out the following special OMC compounds;

"Apply a drop of OMC Adhesive M in the seal ring groove at each of the four ribs"

"Lightly coat the exterior of the impeller cup with OMC Gasket Sealing Compound"

"Apply OMC Needle Bearing Assembly Grease to flat area of the driveshaft. Install the drive cam."

I have an arsenal of automotive type goops and greases. On previous impellers I've done I just used a little of the OMC Triple Guard Grease to hold the CAM or key in place.

What is the other stuff? Is the gasket sealing compound just like the brown/black automotive form-a-gasket or more like an RTV?

Is the Adhesive like a loc-tite or more like 3M 4200 type goop?

Any valid substitutions, or is this stuff really needed?

Thanks,

DP

gasket sealing compound is a non-hardening paint on sealant. adhesive M is very similar to 3M super weather strip adhesive. vasoline is a good subsitute for needle bearing assy grease.
DO NOT use silly cone anywhere on the lower unit.
in salt or some high mineral water silly cone actually induces corrosion. it also generally does not seal very long due to the AL will oxidize under it. triple gaurd is acceptable to retain the key so is adhesive M.

I just went with Permatex super weather strip adhesive when I did mine. Its yellow in color, sticks like crazy, waterproof, automotive chemicals resistant and easy to get. Seems to be working great. I read once here on Iboats that OMC once recommended the 3M version of this adhesive. Seems likely that Adhesive M is just the name OMC gave to it, but don't know for sure.
