Greenbush that is my poor attempt at an engine stand. It's soon to be replaced by a better built one. Every time I go by it in my garage I think "That mess is waiting to fall all over me and my floor!":faint2:

Re: Transom structural question___Please take a look

I almost have the transom top cap and engine well section ready to remove. Its loose but I need to get a bottle jack to help it along. I did have to cut a weld on each side of the engine well so that I can get everything out in 3 pieces. I think this is how it was originally manufactured. After I replace the transom and its time to put the 3 aluminum top pieces back in will someone be able to weld a bead even if there is wood underneath?

Yes you can find guys that do alum. welding. It's good and bad that they weld the caps on top, keeps water out, but rot starts low and works its way up usually. I have the same project with my spectrum eventually so I'm watching yours so I will see the issues and solutions. With luck your transom will come out in one piece.

Yikes!!! I'm glad I decided to replace the transom. This thing is a lot worse than I thought. I will need to pick up the marine plywood tomorrow and hopefully get the old one out in one piece. I have looked at a few epoxy resins and I think I might try the 1:1 stuff from Clark Craft. Does anyone have any experience with this product? Does anyone have a guess to how much I will need for the transom (72" x 18")? All suggestions for the resin would be very helpful!

You don't HAVE to use Marine Grade Ply. Most of the guys on the forum don't. They use Ext. Grade and coat it well with the epoxy. The Aruaco Brand of plywood is a good one. Lot's of guys use the 635 Epoxy from uscomposites. iBoats is having a good sale on their Epoxy right now too!!!

If the dimensions are only 72" x 18" one sheet of 3/4" should do the trick. Grab 2 bottles of Gorilla Glue, the poly kind that's 100% water proof.

I don't use the fiberglass resin for my wood pieces and transoms, I use Spar urethane so I'm not much help deciding about that stuff.
