Years ago, in an introductory book on boats, I read about a formula for approximating the theoretical maximum speed of a displacement hull. It was something like: "X times the square root of waterline length".

I can not longer find the book or the formula. Does anyone have the info?

Re: Speed Formula

(1.34) X (sq rt of the waterline length)

solution is a close approximation and is in knots

Re: Speed Formula

Thanks, exactly what I needed! Do you know if that assumes anything re: aspect ratio of the hull?

Re: Speed Formula

type in "theoretical speed of a displacement hull" in google and you'll have plenty to read on the subject.
