Re: Speed, redlight cameras..... are a good thing..

JB, I don't understand what your asking.
My comment was directed more at the title of this thread. Red light cameras are suppose to deter running a red light but he posts a 6 1/2 minute video of cars running red lights and crashing into other cars.

True, red light cameras will make someone pause and think before trying to make a late yellow no matter if there is a camera installed or not and that may prevent accidents but they also cause accidents and cause congestion.

By the way this is getting political.........lol
Getting busted a few times might influence them to change their driving habits. That would probably save a life or two. I really think that is a good idea.

Hmmmmm. My question was how 9 accidents that weren't prevented (we don't know if there were cameras there) leads you to conclude that no accidents were prevented. I just don't see the connection. Any given camera may prevent thousands of accidents. I think drivers who have paid a few fines for pushing their luck are less likely to push their luck again.

If you brake for an amber light you always run the risk that the driver behind you is inattentive. . .maybe expecting you to run the amber so (s)he can run the red. I have been rear ended twice by such drivers. I think they were simply inattentive, which would have caused an "accident" (read premeditated carelessness) in either case.

I see nothing political in my comment, unlike bashing local government with accusations of dishonorable motives. Now that is political.

The OP's posting of the videos shows what often happens when reds are run, supporting his opinion that the cameras are a good idea.

Whether the cameras do or don't enhance safety is a debate that has no winners, and the debate always ends up discourteous and hostile, bashing local government.

This is as far as this one is going.
