Can anyone tell me how fast a honda 5hp 4 stroke outboard will push a 14 foot alluminum jon boat. The motor is 4 or 5 years old. The reason i ask is i have a chance to update my 1966 evenrude 6 hp works perfect but would like a little faster than 4.5mph
thanks

About 4.5 MPH.

14' is a pretty good sized J-Boat, you need a 10-15HP.

Re: speed

My formula for calculating top speed only works for planing boats and 6hp wont plane your Jon, so it is no good for that. 5HP will not do any better.

You are now getting what is called displacement speed, and you wont get more than that with any hp that wont get her up on plane.

There are lightweight 14' Jons and there are wide, deep, heavy duty 14' Jons. 9.9HP ought to plane a lightweight but it would probably require 15 or 20HP to plane a "Big Jon".

Bottom line? A 5HP 4 stroke isn't gonna get you anything. A 2 stroke that will plane the boat will use less gas than a 4 stroke lugging along at displacement speed.

Re: speed

If you have a bare bones boat and weigh 180 lbs or less you may be able to plane you boat by getting an extension handle so you can sit on the middle seat.I had an old 12ft. steel flat bottomed boat that planed easily with the extension handle on an old 5 hp Gale.I would guess 12 to 15 mph.It also planed easily with
a 140 lb. adult and 2 40 lb kids.without the handle.Boat would not plane with only one aboard sitting in the back.Stick with the 6 uless you go for a bigger motor.
