I wasnt sure where to post this, but this is as good as place as any.

13' 4" in lenght
65" across stern
560 lbs (empty weight-no motor)
V-Hull
40hp Mercury- 2 stoke
fastest current speed 35mph
boat is rated for a 60hp
(Hopefully the pic shows up here in the post)
.........................................

I want more speed. I really like to double what Im doing now, but I would be happy to get it to 60mph.
I really dont think a 60 hp outboard will get me there.

I read a lot about jet drives.

I am opened to suggestion here,
drives?
engine?
jet?
Also, to makes this choice harder,I am limited here on "space". I have 36" from the back of the seat to the inside of the tramsom.
must be light weight, under 200lbs-225lbs at the most, both engine and drive.

Re: Speed!

If the hull is stickered for a 60hp, the go for it, hang a 60HP on it. 1/3rd increase will give you a modest power boost.
As far as hitting 60MPH in that.....
1. No way, boats way to small and underpowered, even for glass water.
2. Have you ever done 60 in a boat? Ever chine walked? It's not fun.

A boat that behaves beautifully and predictable at 30 is not going to be the same animal at 60. 60+MPH hulls are built for that kind of speed and abuse, your 1/6th scale scarab is not.
If you wanna play (without killing yourself) you have to pay, start looking at real scarab's or fountains if your looking for that kind of speed.

Re: Speed!

Jason hit it... speed cost money, period. and if you want to go fast, buy a boat that was made for it. pucker factor goes up in a hurry as you start going faster on the water...

60mph in something that small? You're kidding, right? As soon as that thing starts to get squirrly, its over.
Sweet boat, and would be a blast at 30-40mph, but 60mph would be like taking a Geo Metro on the Autobahn at 140mph. Fun for the few seconds before you scream 'Oh Sh!t!'.
60mph on the water seems much faster, and is very unpredictable, esp for something as small and light as yours.
Stick with the max rated hp for the hull, 'Oh Sh!t!' moments are no fun.

I bet you probably want good economy too :p

Well what you have is a dream....... that and a dollar can get you a lottery ticket.

Seriously, check the prices of a 60 hp outboard and I would suggest a two stroke since they are lighter but still not lighter then 225! Look at a jet drive unit and motor from a high end jet ski...... you will not have the space or like the weight of those either..... If you want 60 + make sure your safety chains are on, your tie downs tight and be in a 65 mph zone because towing is the way that will happen.

Re: Speed!

FWIW: A jet drive is much less efficient than a prop. A 60HP jet drive outboard will have the same powerhead as about the 90-100HP prop. Allot more weight, no more pushy.

Put a 2 stroke 60hp prop on it and have fun. Top speed will probably be somewhere in 40's, but will still be fun.

My thoughts exactly....

Even if you could, I don't think I'd want to be strapped in that little rig doing 60MPH on the water

Re: Speed!

Thanks for all the "real" input guys. There always a few that think they have to be funny.

I am sure you guys are right, I really didnt look at the "safely factor'. I'll look into a 60Hp, 2 stoke. The 40hp I have now is 167lbs . Someone out there got to make a lightweight 60 Hp. Money not the problem, it the information that is piceless.
I dont want to buy/get a different boat, I really like this little boat, very fun toy.
Thank again

I owned a Geo Metro. It was way more fun to drive than anything I've driven since - you get the sensation of going fast without having to worry about speeding tickets. That little boat will do the same thing. 50% more power won't let you go twice as fast, but it might feel like you're going twice as fast.

2000 Mercury 60 hp - 242 lb.
2000 Johnson 60 hp - 250 lb.
Current Yamaha F60 - 237 lb.

You takes your pick, you go faster. How much faster? Maybe 15-18 mph. Is it worth it?

Re: Speed!

I'm not saying do this, or its a good idea, but here it goes...

I could get that boat to CLOSE to 60 for under $2000 max, and within your weight budget. Find a late '90's seadoo PWC with a 787 motor. (spx, gsx) It puts out 110 to 130 horse depending on model, and with drive should be under 250 pounds. It will push a PWC close to 60, should be roughly the same for that. (more weight, but you might actually end up with less wetted hull once you are up and running)

Safe? probably not even close! that thing would get squirley and decide to swap ends on you well before 60!

Re: Speed!

I thought I would update this post.
I just purchased a mercury 60hp 3cyl. - 2 stoke.
I looked for a long time to find one.
No Gps (will have soon I hope) but a good guess-a-mut would be from 36mph with the 40 hp , maybe 50 now with the 60 hp, I will find out soon for a fact what it is doing soon. But reguardless of speed, now , at WOT it can be alittle tricky! I dont believe this boat was made to go much faster, at least with me in it!!
I am having fun. That what it is all about.

Re: Speed!

Make sure you have a kill switch attached to the engine so if you hit a wake and get tossed the boat will stop, for real, if you hit a decent wake at that speed getting tossed is a real possibility and you don't want to have to buy someone a new boat, or worse, cause your ran away and smashed into there's

Re: Speed!

With a boat that sixe I would expect that it should go faster with the engine that is on it.
What are your rpm's? do you have the right prop on it? a speed prop?

Re: Speed!

We had a 10 foot invader. With a 50 hp 2 stroke would hit 50-55 mph. Very scary but fun. With a 25 hp 2 stroke would hit about 35 mph. You need to get the prop set at the proper height. A good jack plate will allow you to try different heights for speed increase. First picture looks like the motor sits way to low. That boat looks like a lot of fun.

Re: Speed!

Reaching a certain speed number is good for bragging rights if that's what you want. If by saying you want speed you mean you want the thrill of speed then i think high 40's mph in that boat will very likely get you the thrill you are looking for and I think a 60hp motor will get you there. Now having said that it is my goal to own a boat that is fast enough so that when someone asks me how fast it will go I'll have to reply with "I don't know".
