Some have little paddle wheels also. Those are electric.On the transom (back), you possibly have a white plastic item with a tube attached to it. That tube will continue to your speedometer and your speedometer measures the pressure that is in the tube. So as you move in the water, the plastic pickup will try to push water up the tube. The faster you travel, the harder it pushes, the higher the pressure. That is how your speedo is possibly working.
That or you got a sweet GPS speedo as these are the only two methods I am aware of. Please correct me if I am wrong anyone.
A GPS can be as far off as the water current as it measures land speed. So if you are going 50 on the GPS down stream in a 5 mph current it will be 5 MPH off of water speed and 10 mph off going up current.
This is probably a stupid newbie question, but I'm wondering how my speedo is actually measuring speed?![]()
