speedo pulling water-accurate?

my boat has an old airguide speedometer-the pinot (probably the wrong spelling...the sending unit part in the back that converts water force to air pressure) needs replaced as it is bringing some water up as well as air to the guage. will replace ASAP but I am curious if this happening will cause the guage to be inaccurate.

you have an air leak in the hose. water cannot get to the guage, unless the air leaks out. either hose, or shot guage. yes it will cause it to be inaccurate, as if it really was accurate before. the faster the speed the more inaccurate they are.

Never saw a speedometer that was worth a hoot. And I went ahead and put one on my boat anyhow. It isn't worth a hoot. Nice decoration though.

Same here, the only accurate ones are the GPS speedometers but they are really expensive. I put mine on just to make my dash look complete.

interesting-I know the hose is new,as I put it in-I did suspect the connection to the gauge though when I did it.an old not too round clamp I found laying around....so-I guess if it holds air, theres no room for water to get in there.makes sense! I dont see any real reason I need a speedo,but since it was born with one I'd like it to work-thanks for the input.

Don't worry about the spelling... I would think a pinot tube would be more useful than a pitot anyway; just pull out the old pinot tube and serve all of your guests a fine glass of wine! You should patent this​

There was a stop watch timing runs and you had to meet a very tight time for the run to count

I've seen some 'joke' marine speedometers too... but oddly enough, the 'Faria' (sp?) on my '05 Bayliner is very accurate... matches the 12 channel WAAS GPS very nicely from 10 mph on up. My '88 Seaswirl (VDO as I recall?) had a good one too.

This is encouraging -I have a buddy with GPS-maybe I can borrow it-just for the sake of fun I'd like to see the differances.even if not accurate,it has been consistant and useful in being able to see and not just feel what is happening with changing trim positions.otherwise,being cool looking and functioning is good enough for me!

I use my stock pitot speedo as a 'forward motion indicator'. If it's not at zero, it usually means I'm moving in the right direction.

GPS is the only way to go, and my speedo is always somewhere between 5 and 15 MPH low of the GPS, depending on... phase of the moon???

I use my stock pitot speedo as a 'forward motion indicator'. If it's not at zero, it usually means I'm moving in the right direction.

My last boat had a speedo (current one uses GPS), while anchored under the Skyway Bridge one day my speedo was reading 10MPH! There was no forward motion going on; my danforth had a good solid hold on the bottom. I imagine the pitot was measuring the tidal flow.
