the speedometer on my boat stopped working halfway through last year.thought it was just gunk in the tube and didn't check right away.when i had time i disconnected and the tube and blew it out.couldn't be in two places at once but could here the air so i thought the problem was solved.go out one last time last year, still no speedo.leave it to this year.go out for first weekend this year and nothings changed.check and can hear air for speedo leeking from inside lower shroud.finally decide to open lower shroud and find air leak.the hose has caught in driveshaft and worn in two.so what!
problem is a water cooling tube to the lower driveshaft bushing has worn through as well.if it was at the same time as the speedo that means 15 hours, one third of that trolling.the motor is a 2006 mercury 90 efi fourstroke.
the question is...if their are no obvious operational problems do you just fix the tubes and just run it as usual and watch for issues.how much cooling does a bushing in 65 degree water need?
to me this should be a warranty issue but the dealer that i bought the boat from is full of morons and i don't trust them as much as i trust me.plus they are 2 hours away(the boat was a good deal with no set up problems and they were nice and tried hard)
the local in town dealers for mercury except one will not talk to me or sell parts.as one guy said "go to the hose supply shop down the street, the guy in my office is waiting to buy a ski boat".the other shop will sell parts but all four are a good four months wait for service ,warranty or other. So i do my own work.
I can understand that they have the same problem as me.You can't find qualified help and sales are the easy profit side of the business.the service will improve with the next recession.
back to my boat...should i run it or take it apart and look for trouble
thanks
woodchip
p.s. they got good parts at napa and are more than happy to sell you stuff
