speedometer hook up

On the boat I recently aquired there is a speedometer in the dash. it has a tube that comes out and runs to the transom area. it was disconected by the previos owner.

Where does it hook to? The motor? A pickup in the hull?

What kind of motor? Some go to a connection on the motor but most common is a pitot tube that the hose connects to.
