I recently purchased a 1984 Champion Bass boat with a 1984 Mariner 200 horse motor. I was told that the motor has the speedometer as part of the engine as opposed the the speedometer I had attached the boat on my old 72 Marlin sterndrive. Is this correct, my speedometer does not work, boat runs great?
As you can tell, I am a lttle ignorant.

Thanks, I should have known. I will just trust the GPS for mph and forget what the guages say. I am heading to Roosevelt lake ( AZ) for a week of fishing, and want everything to go perfect. I guess it doesn't matter how fast I go.

there should be a tiny hole in the front of the gear case that water is forced in when running . it comes up through a small hose and out the gear case above the cav plate. If you hook your speed tube to this it will operate your speedometer............Jerry

Well, it sounds the same as mine. Mine has a little hose sticking out in front of the motor, just above the "bullet". It is disconnected, but that is the speedometer hose. If yours is not working, it is likely clogged up somewhere. You can try and unclog it to make it work again, but I've heard varying results on the success of this. I think you're probably better off relying on the GPS. That's what I do also. Much more accurate.

you're right the gps is more accurate, but unplugging the tube is just a matter of drilling out the little hole in front ot the motor foot. By hand with a tiny drill bit between your fingers. There is nothing but aluminum casting inside the hole till it turns 90 degrees and comes out the top. I have done it many times on my 150 hp. You hit a dead log and plug it again.............Jerry
