The speedometer stopped working on my 89 Sunbird 170 spl. When I bought the boat last summer I tested it at the marina and it didn't work. They did something and it work a few times after that then stopped. What ways can I test besides for electrial. I thought they used compressed air and blew thru the tube form the pitot tube to speedometer. Does that make the needle move? Do the pitot tubes go bad? It doesn't look broken, but it was hanging down when I first looked at the boat last summer but they but it back on. By the way I have an 89 Evinrude 88spl. Not that it should matter.

Hey waterdowg,

The pitot tube or tube could be stopped up.
Disconnect the tube on the back of the speedometer and blow compressed air into the pitot tube. Ya should get air out the other end. If ya get air through it but still no speedo,ya might replace the speedometer head.

g'luck & c/6

Hooty

Waterdowg
Two things to check is hole in pitot pickup, Also most units mount where they will kick up it you hit something so make sure it is down. Check the tubing at both ends and make sure it is tight. Also check the tube all the way and make sure it is not crimped or broken anywhere. Next I guess blow some air into the speedo head and see if it moves.

If you can get to a marine store, buy yourself a "speedo-rooter" which u can use to shove up the little hole in the speedo pick up... if not, a tiny household nail will do the job...

Hi,
As people have said take the tube off the pick up and blow into it ,the speedo should move,if not then take it off the back of the speedo and see if air comes out,i found that mine was a worn out tiny plastic gear in the speedo, which means a new speedo. If the pick up is blocked you can either clear it by blowing thru it backwards with compressed air or,as mentioned poke the hole out.You can buy nozzle cleaners from a welders supply shop for very little money.
Good luck.
