i have a 2000 Volvo 5.7 liter GSi. The speedometer is no longer working. It was working just fine then all of the sudden, nothing. I am pretty sure its not the gauge. Where would I begin to look at the outdrive? Any help being able to identify where to start looking would be greatly appreciated

Re: Speedometer not working

Took my gauge out and it was connected to a air hose connected to the sensor in the back of the boat by the outdrive.

The Volvo drives do not have the speedometer pickup in them like the Mercruisers do.
Look on the back of the boat somewhere for a pitot tube with a small hose attached, that will be the speedometer pickup.
They look something like the one pictured below.

I had the same problem last year. I heard a thum and must have hit something in the water and the speedo stopped working. The pilot tube was pointing horizontal... I put it back down in position and voila it worked.

Don,

What would it take to make a speedometer work on a mercruiser. I have a 3.0l with Alpha one outdrive and I know the gauge work because I test it with air pressure but when hooked up and took it to water it did not work. Do I have to rerun the whole air hose?

Splugeeman, sorry to hijack your post but I have a similar problem with different hardware.

Thanks
Beezee28

It could be as easy as a plugged up hole in the outdrive. Look for a small hole in the front of the drive. (opposite propeller side) This is where the water enters to make your speedo work. Use a small wire to clean it out.

I've had that problem too. Many times if you hit a large wake the pick up will flip up and then no speedo. Hey splugeeman, were you at the Lake of the Ozarks over the weekend?

Re: Speedometer not working

I'm hijacking just as BeeZee28, I have an Alpha One drive. Where do you look to find which hole that might be plugged up?? is it in front of the prop?? is there any way you might be able to provide a picture like Don??? all help is much appreciated. I don't have a Pitot Tube and there isn't a hose that goes down the back of the transom, but there is a hose connected to the speedo gauge. Thanks again...
