Speedometer Question

Hey Everyone

I'm pretty new to the boating world (very new, actually). I do not have a working speedometer. The pitot (is that the right word?) is missing which I've purchased a replacement. When I follow what I think is the speedometer tube, It terminates to a sensor-looking thing mounted on the bottom next to my bilge pump. I do see two screws in the bottom right of the transom (assuming this is where the pitot-thing used to be) but I see no evidence of broken parts nor do I see a hole trilled in the transom above the water line for the tube to feed through - which leads to my question:

Anyone know where the tube may have originally been routed? I have a Javelin 373 F/S with the V6 150 Johnson Fast Strike engine. I certainly have other issues too (leaks and such) that I may ask about in a later post but wanted to see about the speedometer first.

Any help is much appreciated!

Re: Speedometer Question

Follow the plastic tube beginning at the Speedometer.
The other end will be on the outside of the transom.

Is sounds like you started following the Speedometer Tube, and somewhere got confused, and ended up following the Depth Finder wire.

Re: Speedometer Question

I followed the line again and this time didn't get lost. I knew it didn't come out at the transom anywhere. I found it on the leading edge of the lower unit. Looks like a great place to get stopped up!

Flush out the line, You may have an insect nest in the Pitot.

You may need to take a small drill bit, the size of the hole in the leading edge, and ream out the hole BY HAND, not a power drill. Sand / mud can get in there and harden up, plugging the port up. I had that happen on my drive ad took 5 minutes to fix it. Disconnecting the hose at the drive also helps ease the job when you blow some water thru it after cleaning the debris out.

I'm really close to doing the same also. I've got a gps speedo on my depthfinder, I have noticed I don't ever look at the in-dash one anymore even.

If you have ever had a pitot line disconnect from the back of the speedo, it gives you one more reason to get rid of it. (hint, it will spit out LOTS of water, not good if you tend to have other electronics mounted nearby)
