Speedometer Tube??

Just pulled the lower unit from a 1987 115hp tower of power and I'm wondering about a couple'a things...
- There's a tube coming up near the leading edge of the unit...is this the speedometer tube and what's its purpose? Seloc manual makes no mention of it.
- I'm having trouble determining what model the lower unit is. Can it be looked up via a serial number?
- I also have a lower unit from a 115hp from 1984 that I'm wondering if it's compatible with my 1987 motor. The '84 has a pre-load pin and the '87 doesn't....any ideas?

Yes is a speedo pickup - don't surprise me - you can take your serial number to the BAM marine site - yes they will interchange.
