Re: Spell check program

HeadHunt....My new XP doesn't have spell check when I go to tools, options spelling and that's because I don't have miscroft office or another two miscrosoft programs on yet. Wallet toooooooooo thin right now to buy it.<br /><br />One More Cast...I must be having a bad day. Did what you said and downloaded the iespell but i will be darned if I can find anything on my task bar or in the tools tab or tool bar to say I have it. When I go to add and remove programs it's there so what am I missing? Does it also work on outlook express?

Malibu4u.....Right click and scroll down to check spelling, if you click on Ispell just above check spelling you will get their donation page, so after right clicking, click on check spelling.

Re: Spell check program

XP is an operating system, not an e-mail program or a word processing program. Outlook Express is an e-mail program with spell check available by going to tools, options then spelling within the Outlook Express program.<br /><br />HeadHunt

Re: Spell check program

HeadHunt.........Okay, I am really missing something that you are saying or I am really this stupid or else we both are misunderstanding each other. Let me try one more time. Please have patience with me.<br /><br />I just got a brand new CPU with XP Home put in. Picked it up yesterday and brought it home and hook it up. I have been told that before spell check is available(when you pick it up) there must be microsoft office installed or two other microsoft programs before spell check is there. Will be no spell check if you have no microsoft programs installed. Right now, that theory is holding to be true.<br />When I go to OE and make up an email, then click on tools in the email, this is what pops up:<br /> Spelling(but grey color) nothing happens when I click on it cause it's greyed out.<br /> Request read receipt<br /> Check names<br /> Select recipients<br /> Address book<br /> Encrypt<br /> Digitally sign<br /> Request secure receipt.<br />On outlook express its self, if I click on tool then options this pops up:<br /> General<br /> Read<br /> Receipts<br /> Send<br /> Compose<br /> Signature<br /> Security<br /> Connection<br /> Maintenance<br />When I click on any of the above tabs, there is nothing there for spelling check.<br /><br />So as far as I can see, I don't think I am doing anything wrong or am I?

Re: Spell check program

One More Cast....No, I didn't try start, all programs to see if it was there. It probably was as it was in my add/remove program but never thought to check. I uninstalled it but will try it again if HeadHunt can't help me out. Tks!

Re: Spell check program

malibu4u,<br /> I learn something new everyday:<br /><br />"Outlook Express uses the spelling checker provided with the following Microsoft Office programs: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint. If you do not have one of these programs installed, the Spelling command is not available."<br /><br />I never researched this since I also have Office on my system. Now you are correct and back to square one. You have to download a program like iespell as "One More Cast" suggested. I read that you did this once but couldn't get it to work. I don't know what you did but let me give you some general guidelines for downloading any program.<br /><br />1. click on the link to download a program.<br /><br />2. A box should pop up that says something like save or run. Always chose save.<br /><br />3. When you click save, another box will pop up for you to chose a location on your hard drive to save it to. Always save downloaded programs to your desktop and never change the default name the program has given itself.<br /><br />4. after downloading and saving to your desktop, close all programs and double click the program on your desktop. This will install the program onto your system. during the installation, do not change any of the default file locations.<br /><br />5. After the program is successfully installed you can go back to your desktop and delete (rightclick, delete) the downloaded, bundled program you saved on your desktop originally. Not the installed program icon, but the original un-installed bundled program.<br /><br />Now you should be set to go. Most programs I download and install I go ahead and create a shortcut to that program on the desktop. To do this chose Start, all programs and then find your program, right-click it and chose send to desctop(creat shortcut).<br /><br />Sorry for the mess-up. Hope this helps.<br /><br />HeadHunt

Re: Spell check program

Hi HeadHunt..<br />Tks alot for your last email. I thought I was really loosing it! I don't quite know what I did when I downloaded the spell check program but it was later at night so I could have done anything. I do what you recommended for downloading and don't change anything. Not brave enough! Once again, thanks for your help and I will try the download for spell check later on today.

Re: Spell check program

One More Cast........Okay Guy, the HeadHunter and I are straightened out now but I have a question for you on the spell check. Finished downloading it and I can only find it on Internet Explorer and no where else. Does this sound right? It's not on Outlook Express at all and I can't use it with my emails. Am I doing something wrong here to? Can I move it somehow from IE to OE and emails? I know, toooooooooo many questions. Still

Re: Spell check program

Thanks for the link Xcusme. It looks good but I am slowly learning to ask question before I do anything now. Guess I have been burnt too many times and usually my own fault. Do you know anything about this spell check from snap files? Do you feel it's safe to download? Any comments would be appreciated from you.

Re: Spell check program

There are pocket spell checkers you can buy. I find it more usefull than anything on the net as you can take it with you to wherever. They are not any more expensive then a cheap calculator, at least when I bought the one we have, but haven't looked for them lately.

Re: Spell check program

Thanks Xcusme for your help. Your advice is always appreciated.<br /><br />telmanmn...Another good idea but I will try the download and see how it works. Sure sounds like I could have used the spell checker you are talking about at work though.

Re: Spell check program

One more option is to not use Outlook Express - it is full of security holes. I use Thunderbird from Mozilla. It is open source, secure, very good, and completely free (no strings attached and fully functioning). It has an integrated spell checker. got to www.mozilla.org to download a copy. Along the lines of free software, Open Office is another open-source software package that provides a very good word processor, spreadsheet, and other packages. www.openoffice.org - just in case you were interested.
