Re: Spell

Yup, yeah, ah yuh, all acknowledgements :) and all accepted!

Upon first moving to VT with my 6 year old ...... his typical response was "yeah" and my wife would correct him to say "yes"...... after the first year in VT the response was changed to "yup" ..... and my wife (not exactly thrilled with VT) decided she was happier with "yup" :D

I remember when the first japanese motor cycle owners manuals hit the market....... those always made for fun reading. There were many things lost and added in the translation. This accounts for the language used in some of our iboats posts too..... we are global ;)

Re: Spell

Isn't it "Ayuh'?...........
Bondo, ruling please.........:D

Hey JB, me Bro might have ya here. Me thinks Bondo uses 'Ayuh' as a salutation not necessarily an acknowledgement. 'Course there are limits to one brain cell n' all. Causes spellin' problems too!! JR

Re: Spell

Here’s a little factoid on Albert Einstein that just might be of interest to some of the people on this thread.

<Although he lived for many years in the United States and was fully bilingual, Einstein claimed never to be able to write in English because of "the treacherous spelling.>

When you come right down to it, spelling (and the English language, for that matter) requires a great deal of memorization. In order to be the best you can be at it, you have to absolutely commit to memory all the rules, the many exceptions to those rules, and when they adhere to no rule or exception, the actual words themselves.

Einstein didn't like to memorize much of anything (it is reported that he had to look up his own home phone number) so that he wouldn't consume his valuable brain capacity with information that could be readily found elsewhere.

Frogger's right - Einstien did a lot of communicating through equations - the very "language" of his science. I guess the rest of us are stuck with the rote memorization...or spell check. :p

Re: Spell

I still use the Google tool bar and the associated spell checker on almost every post. My issue is I type pretty fast, but can't look at the screen . . . Sometimes what I come up with is not even close to what my brain thought I was doing. And with this latest software I have typed out a relatively long post and looked up and there is nothing there. I have to click in the little box before I start and forget sometimes . . . Doh!

Re: Spell

The are about a hundred words that are pronounced the same (NOT including lose and loose) that a spell checker will not catch.

Most common examples I can think of are there and their, bored and board.

Of course there are many, many misspellings that make legal words that are not the word the poster was thinking of. Worst case is loose for lose ( I think I see loose more often than lose), but there are many more.

The only harm done is that the poster immediately makes the impression of an uneducated or sloppy user of the language. We can usually (NOT always) figure out what (s)he means but that does not alter that first impression.

Re: Spell

My use of “Word “is not only for the spellchecker; it is for the ability to/too cut and paste an article, and be able to have it in front of me while I respond. I have found that “Word” gives you most of the time a pretty good selection of words to choose from, most of the time I make a pretty good guess, sometimes I may guess wrong, but most times I luck out and get it right/write.:D I have found that the word “there”, rather than the possessive pronoun “their ”is suggested in most cases when there /there is put in. Being the lazy lout that I am, I go with the flow.

I have Microsoft office 2000 installed on this computer it also comes with “Excel” and “Word point,” both of which I never use. I been looking at new desktop computers for the house, most come with windows vista, which I am under the impression that I will not be able to put my version of Office on. Don’t want to shell out a couple of hundred dollars for another disk that I only use part of. Plus I kinda like Xp.

Re: Spell

Occasionally I see eBay items with spelling errors in the title. Now that just baffles me.
There's money to be made there. Just figure out the common mistakes and search them out. People looking to bid on a "Tri-Hull" will miss the "Tri-Haul" and you can get it cheap.
