Maybe its because of the speed most people type or lack of concern due to the short life of most posts but has anyone else noticed that there are a boat load (pun intended) of common spelling errors showing up in threads?

Who are you the grammar fairy?:D:eek:;)

I know my grammar is horrible  but my spelling is not too bad  I agree we need a built in spellcheck. I know there's a little icon on the upper right of the reply page, but I don't know how to use it, I clicked on it once but it did nothing, I already have spellcheck on my computer for e-mail, but I need it here.

Re: Spelling

Many people (especially young people) think that texting, email, and the net don't require correct spelling or grammar. I may use a lot of funky, honkin', flippin' slang, but I try to spell and even punctuate properly. I am really not against a shift away from handwriting skills etc., but I am concerned that spelling and grammar are going to become the realm of the snob.

Like that one . . . :p I notice a lot now too . . .

BTW, I use the Google toolbar spell checker and like it well enough to stick to it . . .

Re: Spelling

I use a lot of abbreviations and acronyms when texting. I might even do so on some emails if it's just a quick pass back and forth thing to a buddy.

A forum post is something that stays around and is read by many so I figure I should try to spell correctly and use good grammar. I know mine is not perfect, (I add a lot of parenthetical stuff) but I do make an effort to proofread for typos and grammar.

Re: Spelling

I try to correct any errors I've made, but sometimes I miss something.

Here's my standard come back when the spelling police point out a mistake I made.

:DThanks for the spell checking. I have edited the comment to correct the typo.
I was not aware that we had ‘hired’ an editor. I am often left in the dark on these types of decisions.
Nonetheless, thank you for your dedication so far. Please let me know if you find any additional typos on the website. We would like to get them all fixed by the end of the week. While some may feel this is an aggressive goal, I can see by your determination and work ethic that this should not be a problem. While reviewing the site, you may find that sometimes our content does not read as smoothly as we would like. Perhaps you could advise us on how to improve the flow of the forums.
Your noble service to the entire world will not go unnoticed.:D

Re: Spelling

Message box has an automatic spell checker. Misspelled words have a red line under them. Place the cursor on the word and right click.

They also show up when you edit or quote.

Or is this a function of Firefox?

Re: Spelling

I know I was falling a sleep when I typed the thread I have in DC, my eye lids were getting heavy. I read the thread the next day and I couldn't believe how many letters that I left out of words and so on. I didn't bother fixing any of it.

Misspelling = ignorance (lack of knowledge for whatever reason)
Not caring = Attitude towards the rest of the world
Slang = Spoken dialects
Texting?= Foreign language

And your probably right about the snob:(

That would be you're . . . :p This is fun all by itself. Go ahead, call me a snob :D

Then I would have to call myself one too. :D
I was referring to the "realm" of the snob.:)

Is class over teacher? Many of us are ignorant in our own ways, nothing to get spiffed over IMO :D As long as the poster gets his/her point across is all that matters to me..........SS

Re: Spelling

Here is a freebie that works very well. http://www.iespell.com/

Thats what I use. A checkmark and ABC sitting right up there on top. Works no matter where you are. For IE, don't know about Firefox/Mozilla though. (some day they are next). I'm still IE6. Guess IE8 coming out too...more fixing (screwing up) of something that don't need fixing.
