Looking for some suggestions on getting a few more pony's out of my 5 Litre. Its a low time engine for its age. Ideally I'd upgrade to a 5.7, but this is already in there. I was planning on rebuilding the carb this winter, but is there a different one I could substitute for some more power? Is there alot of work involved in changing to new cyl heads? I'm looking for some relatively simple mods without the need to pull the motor...

Thanks

I have found that an analysis of upgrades such as you seek usually results in high costs for low benefits.

You are not going to find a lot of power with minor bolt ons for a 305. Just too limited with the displacement. You can change the heads but most are going to have larger combustion chambers since they are made for 350 and larger engines, which in turn will lower your compression ratio, not helping your quest for power. The small bore of the 305 doesn't help the with airflow when heads with larger valves are installed, they kind of get shrouded by the cylinder walls. Not sure how big you can go either. If you currently have a 2 barrel carb an upgrade to a 4 barrel will net a gain, and not be too expensive, nor a lot of work. Changing the heads, that's a different story.
