Re: Spider Cracks and gouges

Hello there Raschoony..

All good opinions here :)

However..IMO at least..The first "spider crack" needs some glass. That type of 'center out' cracking is caused by pressure from the Inside. So..you should try to find that location inside the boat and relieve what ever is causing it in the first place. The outside gelcoat and a layer or two of glass should be ground down and replaced with little torn circles of CSM and resin. Sand it smooth ( concaved just a tad to allow for the gelcoat buidup ) and then apply the gelcoat. A perfect "preval" sprayer candidate repair.

Those other "chips" that are to the glass just need some matched gelcoat paste ( gelcoat and cabosil ). One set is just two air voids..and the other chip is just the gelcoat chipped off. No need for glass and resin for those little dudes. They should be sprayed as well after the fill and fairing is done. You dont need Micro balloons for any of these repairs..cabosil is all you need...especially for the gelpaste.

Good luck..

YD.

Re: Spider Cracks and gouges

Just google a 'gelcoat repair kit" and pick something that has at least Red, Yellow and Black. I dont see one with Green in it but that can help you if you find one with it.

A 90 sea ray should be Yellow ( the Reddish yellow not the green yellow ) and a bit of Red. You might have to add a drop of black to it at the end just to dirty it up.

You should be prepping a spot for your color match first. You will never get the color just putting it on a clean buffed out spot. Sand a small 4x4" spot and buff it ( 320, 600 then buff it ). Use this for your match or your going to get a halo around your repairs.

Re: Spider Cracks and gouges

Has anyone tried the new product to fix chips and hairline cracks that is in the latest Trailerboat Fisherman mag? They say you can fix chips and hairline cracks without sanding in 9 seconds. Be interesting to see if anyone has used it. It seems to be popping up in all the boating mags lately. I found this on the web, http://info.nanotechrepairs.com/hf1/#oid=1005_2 so might give it a go and post back once I've tried it but if anyone has used it, let me know....

Never seen this^^^^ Thanks for the Link!!!
Make sure and let us know if you use it. Not sure how easy or well it will blend with existing colors. Kinda like that car wax that's supposed to hide scratches!!!!

Re: Spider Cracks and gouges

Posted on March 17 that I'd dremelled out mu spider cracks ready for filling. Ordered 1 qt of White Gel coat from US Composites. I had both Cabosil & Q Cells left over from my rebuild job in 2012, so used the Cabosil Used cleaned out yohurt pots and plastic spoons to mix and a flat blade plaster knife for the filling. After putting on Coat 1, I used a Sandwich bag cut in 2 to cover the repair and taped it down with masking tape. left it 24 hours to cure. Used my random orbital sander with a 250 grit to level down the first fill. There were a couple of small air type pockets visible. Mixed Coat 2 and repeated. that coat was left for 48 hours due to me being busy. Used the random again and the job is as smooth as a baby's bum. I could and probably will go over with a finer wet & dry, then polish up, but not right now. Job done.
One thing I did notice is that the day after mixing the paste, the yoghurt pot and plastic spoon had melted, so if you are cheap & recycle like me, put something underneath (like a piece of card) to protect whatever you're mixing on.

I kinda figured it was the Light weight stuff. You might mix up some PB and use it to level it out and then lay a couple of layers of the .75 over that then sand and fair.

These cracks and the hole was under a vinyl trim... I'm using this area as practice before I hit the areas out in the open...

Ok... what is PB?

We call it Peanut Butter. Thickened Resin. Polyester resin thickened with Cabosil to the consistency of creamy Peanut Butter. You can add some Class Bubbles to make it easier to sand.
