Hi all, a friend of mine suggested that I install a spin-on gas filter on my 92 Johnson 90 HP outboard. Can this hurt my performance? Do you install it before or after the pump bulb? Thanks in advance for the help guy's. John

Re: Spin-on gas filter?

I just installed a screw-on fuel/water seperater on my 79 Evinrude 150. I put it right by the tank. (Below the bulb) Mine works great. I also installed a vacuum gauge on the moter side of the filter. When it gets to about 7 inHg its time to change the filter.

Not at all. In fact it will likely save you from some severe headaches at some point.

Do you install it before or after the pump bulb?

I've heard arguments for each, but IMHO it comes down to where it's most convenient. On one boat I've got it before the bulb, on my other it's after the bulb, they both work just fine.

Thanks guy's, I will get one ordered and get it installed for this season. rlb9844, thats not a bad idea on the vacuum gauge, but how do you come up with the 7 inHg to determine when to change the filter. Will that be in my manual? Tahnsk for the help. John

It's actually 4 inHG max allowed on that mtr. It's stated in the OEM service manual.

... and that's almost 2 psig, a big number compared to fuel pump capability. I've just routinely changed filters every spring.

I'm going to go out on a limb and ask if you guy's had a preference on brands or if it makes that much difference. In my research I found that attwood and sierra are mentioned the most. Thanks for all the help everyone. John

Re: Spin-on gas filter?

The issue with adding a fuel water separator is the extra draw the fuel pump must do to suck fuel. Your engine was not made originally to handle this type of filter. Probably not a bad idea to add one, but you need to be careful. If you currently have an in-line filter (yours does under the cowling-you need to remove it. The vacuum gauge is a neat idea-you can run that engine lean at high rpm's if your new filter draws too much vacuum. Many of these filters indicate what hp they will handle. Mercury makes a water separator filter kit, complete with the filter, the aluminum head and hose barbs-which will mount to the inside of the boat. Make sure you use large hoses and don't kink them, or the vacuum can quickly increase above what the pump can handle at high rpm's. The later V6 OMC/Bombardier engines come with a vacuum switch which will signal a warning horn if the vacuum gets above 7 hg-that's when the V6 engine can run dangerously lean.
