Hey guys, I am currently equipped with a Mercury/Quicksilver spin on filter. I was wondering, are there any Racor filters that will spin onto my current base, or would I need to get a whole new mounting assembly. Not sure how worth it it is to do this. I know you guys swear by them, and its cool that you can "see" the water collect in them, but is it really worth the money? After putting on a reman powerhead I just want to cover my bases well............

Racor makes filters for both Merc and Evinrude filter heads.

It's almost $20K to replace my motor. A filter is $25 a year. 'nough said

Agreed! But all the racors that I have found are more in the $100 range.

EDIT, so the see thru bowls are the ones that are pricier. I guess its nice to see if you have water working its way into there.

The $100 price includes a filter head which you don't need if you already have a filter. Otherwise, just get a Racor filter with bowl. I paid less than $60 the last time I bought one. After that, filters are $25 a pop

whole aftermarket kit for under $30 at wally world, for comparison. IMO the transparent bowl is not all that useful -- just screw off and empty the filter periodically (can check for water by pouring it into a jar and letting it settle.) If built in tanks, will want a water separating filter of some kind -- portable tanks? maybe not so much. I have a Merc base and filter on my inboard, and it works fine -- some Dry gas and Sta bil always in the tank, water separating fiilter changed annually. No issues to date.

That's good to do as long as you don't put the filter back on. By pouring out the filter, you transfer debris from the inlet of the filter to the output going to your engine and a sure way to clog it up.

^^point is good. replacements are available for about $12, give or take. choices -- maybe check and replace a couple of times during the season. Situations differ. I've been OK with annual replacement so far.
