I am with many of you that have stated there is quality out there, maybe not on the radio, you just have to find it.

I tried not to pose my original question in a way that would mean "favorite." I guess I screwed that up by then listing some of my favs, even though I thought they were technically "better" than radio artist today. For many of us, quality is heard individually.

For sake of argument, I am going to pick what I believe to be the best "Rock" band of all time... Zeppelin. I pick Zeppelin for many reasons; 1.their music has weathered the test of time. I have no numbers to back this up, but it appears that the Zep fan base has continued to grow since 1980. They have lost none of their original fan base, but continue to gain fans that have since been born after their break up. 2.they were one of the first groups to bring a blues influenced brand of rock into mainstream music, 3. Pure numbers, they have so many songs that are played and well known all over the world 4. Versatility, song examples - Black Dog, Hot Dog, Bring it on Home, Bron Y Aur Stomp, Since I've Been Loving You. These are songs that are only related by the fact that Zep performed all of them.
5. RP, JPJ, JP, JB, arguably by many, the best individual artists at their instruments of all time. 6. Not necessarily my personal favorite, but still among the greatest, if not the greatest rock song ever written, Stairway to Heaven.

My questions,

1. Will any "new"(2000 or more recent) band regardless of genre, ever equal(hit songs) what Zep has amassed?

2. Will any "new" band/individual ever have the influence on music that Zep has had and continues to have on music?

I understand there are some who would argue Zep as not being the "best ever". I tried to post some objective qualities Zep possessed and wish to save the "best ever" argument for another thread.

it will happen at some point when a group or solo artist can evolve naturaly

not as a creation of a record company which is why so much current music has no lasting power

tommays

I would have to say that the Rolling Stones & the Beatles are of that stature......Whenever you hear one of their songs you know who it is......JK

Most radio stations always do a countdown of the most requested songs throughout the year on New Years Eve.........I was just running to the store and had on the Classic Rock station....with 125 songs left the dj said "There are a lot of Beatles and Zepplin coming up in the countdown"

Even though I like "Dazed and Confussed" and "Black Dog" better.........I KNOW the number one song on that list always remains "Stairway to Heaven"

I guess I am not as discerning as thou, but there are some groups, the Kinks for one, that fool me. Probably because I am more of Cricket fan than a Beatle fan. :)
