splash shield

I have a 17' fiberglass starcraft that I need to rebuild the transom on, I will need to cut the top cap to do this and while it is off I could modify it. There is a 18" splash shield on the boat now, would I be able to permanently remove this or narrow it without major consequences? I am looking to increase the room in the boat and wondered if any have done this? In searching I have not found a thread on this yet. Mabye this would be a dumb thing to do, looking for opinions and info. Thanks

Give us some pics and you will get some suggestions. There are many ways to modify and these guys are great at helping out.
