I think @nola mike asked about fuel usages vs speed, etc. Now that I have run the boat for a longer period of time, I was able to put some of the mpg data on the performance graph.

I plan on raising the engines 1.5", which should help with the performance, so the numbers may go up . . . (maybe). If they do, I'll be staying with the 19" P props.

is that using readouts or hard math? Wondering with your gauge issues.
The data is from the real-time readouts of the engines.

I have been recording my overall travel distance vs. fuel usage, but the fuel gauge wonkiness has thrown a 🔧 in all of that.

How much fuel is there ???

So, I brought 20 gallons of fuel out to the boat, not knowing how much fuel is in there.

The gauge read 20% (150 gallon tank)
I put 5 gallons in . . . the gauge now read 40% :rolleyes:
I put the remaining 15 gallons in . . . the gauge read 46% :unsure:

I took a look at the sender (WEMA 001306) I could not read the MPN off the top, but it looked like the resistance was 185 ohm (aka European). So I set the input translation to 'Europe' . . . no difference.

I'll have to do some more testing . . . maybe it is the USA resistance (240-30)

I did check the total fuel used and the port engine was saying 54 gallons . . . and 58 gallons after my running around in the bay. The port engine said 3 gallons, . . . that must be not collecting data. I'll take the port engine to be 1/2 of the fuel usage, assuming both engine would use about the same.

Call it 116 gallons. This season I have put in a total of 170 gallons . . . so about 54 gallons or 36% would remain. . . the gauge shows 46% o_O

I am not showing my wife that video ... last night as we were puttering around a cove she said, "how come this engine smokes so much?" I chuckled and said, "because there is nothing better than the smell of burning oil in an outboard!" She rolled her eyes at me!

So your looking at an actual gauge and not something like Vessel View where you can calibrate it?

In my research . . . 001306 is the mount style, and there is more specific information on the wiring plate (which I could not read)

Anyway . . . the way it all works is the sender wiring connects to one of the Veratron VMH-35 gauges (3 large round gauges in the helm panel) and it (analog) gets converted to digital information. The VMH-35 then connects to the small gauge (Veratron VMH-14) using 'easy link' which acts as a slave to the VMH-35. As far as I can tell, 'easy link' is like J1939. at least the connectors look the same.

I can configure how the VMH-35 converts the analog signal from the sender . . . there is ABYC-US, Europe, Yamaha, and Custom.

I'd like to verify that the WEMA sender is working properly. Then is is a matter of what the Veratron gauges are doing to the signal.

I'm not a fan of the Veratron gauges, but there was not a lot of options for the type /size of gauge using NMEA200 networking.

In other news . . .

I also tested the auto-pilot function . . . there are several different things it can/should do . . .

  1. Maintain stationary position (like being anchored)
  2. Maintain a certain heading while underway
  3. Track to a certain point while underway
  4. Route to a destination using waypoints that create the route.

I did not test the stationary position, and focused on the other 3

Heading and track seem to work fine. Track is a little better, because it handle current & wind drift, which heading does not.

I could not get the route function to work . . . I believe there is a network connection needed between the Garmin and the Dometic/Seaways stuff.

That will be for the off-season to figure out.

Anyway, the auto-pilot is pretty cool, as I can set the route to Woods Hole and a few other destinations and have the boat drive (steer) itself. :cool:
