We are going to plan some trips to look around.
The northeast is very tough, growing up in NYC in the 1960s it was so different than now, believe it or not, a middle-class person could afford a house, a car, a yearly vacation, and send their kids to college. Now the house I lived in (Brooklyn NY) from 1959-1968 which my parents sold for about $30,000 in '68 is now well over a million. A simple attached row house, windows only front and back, garage under the front porch, tiny backyard. We liked it though as kids.
Supply and demand. We need new Levittowns, not McMansions.
Levitt & Sons built 7,000 houses on former farmland in Nassau County (Long Island) NY from 1948-1955 or so, they sold for approx $7,000 then. Small, cheap, but was perfect for returning veterans. It's still a nice place to live but prices are way up like I said.
That's what we need. Another Levittown. Increase supply, is the only way.
There is plenty of open land further out on Long Island, I don't get why this isn't happening.

The Admiral wants to live near our 'kids' (who now have kids of their own). The summer place is here to stay . . . We are now into our 5th generation on Cape Cod.

We have been splitting our time between the east and west coast to visit 'the kids' and do the grandparent thing. Our west coast crew is looking at a job change in the next 6 months, so it may be east coast (or remain west coast).

At that point we will decide on a place to buy . . . If I had to guess, it will be in CT. So, I'm scanning real estate listings for places with large garages or a barn of some sort. It would be nice to bring my sailboat 'home' over the winter for TLC, which would save time in the spring prepping both boats.

The CY338 is basically an immovable object, other than local towing, and the summer place makes for a decent winter storage location.

so Ted and Admiral will be doing the great loop towing a barge with their furniture in the near future?

side note - iirc the number was about 30% of people that move to be close to kids/grandkids move back (or again with them) because things change for the kids.

We took that into account on our move, but then again it was only 40 minutes away. But we are 99% sure the kids with the g-baby will never move out of area and the others may but they looks to be going the dink route and love to travel so they will be back. That said, he looks to be getting a job on the afb and that keeps him here and she is a mammas girl....
