I have a 73 16ft. caravelle with and 85hp. johnson and I am putting in new stringers, deck and transom. My question is under the splashwell it was boxed in on both sides connected to the transom with foam in each box with about a one foot wide channel to the bilge box and I was wondering if I need to replace them or can I leave it open under there for storage? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Splashwell Support help!

The stern of my boat sounds like it is built up something like yours, I have a 20ft maxum cuddy turned center console. I've been wanting to remove the boxing at the stern to gain room in that area.
If your stern is like mine it's about two inches thick in the middle part of the transom and about 3/8" or so on either side of the transom. Another words my boxing appears to be there to give the stern support and keep it from twisting.
I think something will need to be there to give the stern support.
Here's a couple pictures, you can see the fiberglass on either side of the stern isn't real thick.
