Splined shaft supposed to slide out of bellhousing?

Got my engine pulled, after reading up on everything i could find on the Volvo 270. Not much out there as to this part, but from what I have read, I was under the assumption the horizontal driveshaft should have slid out of the gimball bearing. I'm assuming at thi spoint I'll have to remov eth ebellhousing and go from there?

There are a couple of snap rings to remove before you remove the shaft. Here's a page that Don S put up here quite awhile ago that should help:

You have to get the flywheel cover housing off the engine to replace the bearings.

Ah, thank you gentlemen.

On the issue of engine alignment...does it apply in this scenario? It would seem not...please correct me if I'm wrong....
