I have a 1961 Johnson and need to split the lower end so that I can replace the shift rod bushing. The threaded rod nuts came right off, what are the tricks to split the lower end to access the bushing?

What engine/model hp is it? The skeg just unscrews off. 6 screws. Then pry apart gently with a screwdriver... Then the prop shaft comes out easily... slight gentle prying required then the shift rod slides right out. To remove the bushing with the shifter O ring search on this forum and you will see the simple tool to buy or make to pop it out.

Sorry, it's 75 horse V4S12S. The lower end is out, I took the nuts off of the two rods and don't want to break anything by forcing it.

Seems like I remember answering this question someplace already.
