Hello Everyone,

What type of spray guns are best for spraying gelcoat and what guns will work?

I recently repaired several minor dings and scratches on the hull of my Key West 1900. I used a general purpose airbrush with a 1.1mm tip and it worked fine; however, I was only spraying 1/2 oz. to 1 oz. at a time.

I have a HVLP primer gun with a 1.7mm tip. Would that be a good choice for spraying gelcoat? I also have a couple of finish guns but I do not think I could get enough material through them. I am very new to spraying gelcoat and I am having a hard time finding anything written about this.

What do ya'll use?

It all depends on how big of an area you want to spray. Need a little more info on what you want to do and how much you want to spend.

Re: Spray Guns for Shooting Gelcoat?

Sorry, for not being more specific. An example would be the bottom of a twenty foot boat or maybe twenty square feet on the side of the hull.

I will be looking for a bay boat in the twenty-one to twenty three foot range to restore and then use. The boat I am working on now was in good shape when I got it and needed very little. My learning curve on gelcoat repair started very steep and has leveled out somewhat. My next project will take a whole lot less time.

I have some pretty good automotive type spray equipment. My guns range from Sata and DeVillbiss to Sharp. I am curious as to gun type and tip size.

I hope this clarifies what I am trying to learn.

Thanks for the response.
