Re: Spray in foam

Great Stuff is supposed to be closed cell, but I'd be leery of using it in this application. Its flotation characteristics aren't listed, and it's not USCG approved.

Just out of curiosity;

I can vision spraying the Canned Foam under the floor through a bunch of 1/4" holes.
But, how do you mix two part foam together and get it spread out under the installed floor in under 45 seconds?

You might also contact a contractor that sprays foam inside of finished walls to do the job.
If you tow the boat to where he is already spraying it could be a 5 minute bonus job to him!

Watch how to do the two part foam on one of friscoboaters threads that is how I learned to do it and he's pretty much a pro at boat restoring: - )

Re: Spray in foam

Uncle Willie, watch a pour in foam video, it tends to work pretty well when poured above 80degrees.

Great stuff when used to fill an area w/ a large volume tends to not fully expand & is often unexpanded in deep pockets of foam. It can also expand at an uneven rate when filling a large contained space, like under your deck. Not ideal......

More importantly, not rated as a flotation foam.........

Re: Spray in foam

I saw it done once on a boat with the floor already installed. in the stern a hatch was cut in of something like 12"x18" and a drain hose for the planned compartment was routed from the bilge area through a rear bulkhead and up through the hatch cutout. A 2" hole was cut in the front with a hole saw and the boat was parked with the bow a few inches lower than the stern. Slightly more foam than was needed for that compartment was poured through a funnel in the 2" hole and a piece of wood and a cinder block were placed over the hole. A few minutes later a little mushroom of foam appeared through the hatch hole... after it set up the mushroom was removed along enough to allow the hatch liner to drop in and the hose to attach to a thruhull in the bottom of the liner.

Re: Spray in foam

The "Great Stuff" foam is not meant for marine flotation. It's water resistance characteristics are somewhat unknown. I do use the great stuff as an adhesive, as it seems to be quite good in that regard.

US Composites, as mentioned, seems to have the best prices on the foam kits. I have used their 8 cubic foot kit and plan on buying a couple of kits soon.

X2 on the Us Composites. I used 4 total gallons on the Carlson Restoration (2 gallons of A and 2 gallons of B) Easy to work with too.

Re: Spray in foam

ok, so about a gallon of each will be fine for my 17' boat. can I cut holes in the floor to pour it through or do I have to take the floor up to put it in :( ?

Re: Spray in foam

Drill holes wit ha hole saw on the center line and on both sides of the floor, pour foam from sides until foam comes out center line and then the side holes, move on down the line and repeat. Be a nightmare doing with out the floor in in my opinion!

Re: Spray in foam

I used the can stuff under the gunwale cap on my boat along with chunks and pieces of the original foam. Then I trimmed it up and painted a waterproofing coating on to seal it . After I figured the cost of the cans it would have been a lot cheaper to use the 2 part foam . You live and you learn I guess ..
