A friend has a aluminum jon boat that leaks pretty good. He's planning on putting spray-on bedliner on the bottom. What's the pro's and con's on doing something like this? The boat is a duck hunting rig. Thanks.

Not sure it will stop the leak, might consider inside patch first and then value of boat.

A friend of mine did this with the roll on stuff from Wally World (Herculiner?). His jon boat was leaking pretty bad and he rolled this stuff on the inside and outside to the waterline and it doesen't leak a drop now. It's a little thinner than the spray-on liner and didn't add anymore weight than a gallon of paint would. He just scuffed it with a scotch brite pad before painting and says you can't get the stuff off now if you tried.

spots

SA cop i'd be interested on knowing what he decides. I am having a mysterious leak somewhere in my boat and still wanted to know where to aim or do first. Just bought some JB Weld at Walmart to patch a possible area. Post results

I tried JB on a crack in my bow and it popped off but it was near the eye and flexed a lot. I smeared construction adhesive on it 2 years ago and it's still holding.

-ain't pretty though.

spots

Re: Spray-on bedliner

Boat performance should be considered before putting anything, other than paint, on the bottom of a boat. Putting a bed liner coating on the bottom will increase friction between the bottom and the water and will most likely cut down on top end speed. This also has an effect on the engine because the engine will have to work harder to over come the increased friction caused by the coating. Now if ya' ain't worried about all the above, at least consider putting the coating on the inside of the boat....if possible. Less likely to be scrapped off and make an ugly hull and will dampen sound coming through the hull.

Just my $.02 worth.

The inner hull won't let him spray the stuff on the inside. It nearly covers the entire inside of the boat.

paint it, the stuff is porous, will have bubbles. I put it on bare metal inside my 4x4, now the floor is rusting away. its ok if he paints it first. it's great for wear though, the places where it doesnt rust, it's tough, took a good beating a couiple times

Hey SAC, Have him take a look at Durabak coatings. It is a roll on bedliner, but does come in a smooth finish. i. e., it doesn't have the rubber granules in it. This would take care of the friction issue on the bottom. I just coated my duck boat on the inside with the granule type, and it sticks to 'bout near everything-trust me-I got it on 'bout near everything and it don't come off!
