Spraying equipment

I'm getting close enough to buy paint for my boat. I'm going to use Interlux brand paints and I plan on spraying however have never sprayed before and will need proper equipment. Does anyone have any recommendations to a good spray gun that won't break the bank along with any other equipment that I might need? Does anyone have any recommendations on what equipment to avoid also?

Well I am no expert but I can tell you that I have had ok luck with a Finish-line III gravity feed HVLP gun. You have to have a pressure regulator to take the line pressure down to 15-20 PSI. The one problem with a gravity feed gun is that they don't work particulary if you have them tilted backwards (like spraying the bottom of a hull while its on blocks). A cup gun works better for that and thats what we ended up having to use for most of the bottom. I've heard good things about the Harbor Freight guns for the money. Maybe something like this:

Are you going to add a flake to the paint to match the origional red?

For a one time or occasional paint job the HF units work fine, gravity or siphon will work. Like already said, it can be difficult to paint pointing up with a G feed though.

Ask yourself this question...... do you really want to try a new method and go through the heartaches ????

Compressor, gun, safety equipment.....90%+ use the roll and tip method with interlux and get great results.
