Spraying Interlux and Enamel

I tried my first round of roller and brush painting on friday and got really poor results, I was not happy at all with the way it turned out. So I'm going to sand it back down as much as I can and try a different approach.

I have a set of guns, HVLP and standard and wondering how well oil based enamel sprays?, I'll have to thin it and am wondering if paint thinner will cause it to flash too quickly to flow?

I've never sprayed enamel before, it's always been two part paints for cars so I just want to make sure I get it right this time :)

Thanks

Which paint are you rolling? What went wrong?

Re: Spraying Interlux and Enamel

Both actually, I tried to do a roll and tip but didn't get good results. I did in the early evening while the sun was up but it was not windy or hot, I got bubbles from the roller which I tried to tip down. The Enamel actually flowed a little better, but after looking at it the next day you could clearly see the brush marks. So I'm thinking spraying would at least give me more consistent results...

Maybe some better help will come along...

From what I've been reading, too much thinner will make it bubble. You using a foam roller and badger brush for tipping? Very thin coats?

Using Perfection or Brightsides? I've read some work better sprayed than others.

I might try again this week, I have to sand the transom back down until it's flat again, then I'll try to roll and tip it again with a second person and see what happens. I've been solo on this boat, which is why I'm thinking a spray gun, I can shoot it pretty quickly as well and do it alone..

Gotta get it done, summers *almost* here :)

Perfection needs a bunch of thin coats (up to 5) to look the best.

bubbling would most likely be caused by contaminants... what did you clean the surface of the hull with?

If you see brush marks, you're pressing too hard with the brush I think. You just want to touch the rolled paint hard enough to pop any bubbles formed, not move the paint around. Barely touch at all.

Work quickly... don't let the edge you're working on dry completely before you paint the next area.

I thinned brightsides down 10% yesterday and sprayed at 60 psi and had two inline water separators. Came out very nice, few sags but overall very happy. I will sand it down with 320 and go again this weekend. Using an indoor shop. Took about 2 hours to spray.

What did you thin it with? If I'm not mistaken Interlux has a special thinner for thinning Brightsides.

Also, what did you spray it with? At 60 psi, sounds like a siphon gun vs HVLP. And if a siphon gun, how did you arrive at 60 psi, I thought they were more like 40-45 psi.

What Interlux product are you using? As Erik mentioned their Perfection is a multi-coated product. Actually, all of them are but more so the Perfection.
If you want to spray then please use the proper safety gear. I know you're a big boy so I'll say no more about that.
The little secret to keeping one part enamel paint flowing smoothly ( if brushing ) is a product called Penetrol. Justs retards the drying and keeps a wet edge longer. Been using it for years with nothing to complain about.
If you decide to go the spray route get a cheap gravity gun ( $100.00 or so).
Use a .14 or .17 tip, thin your product down about 10 to 15% and plan on at least three coats. It really isn't that much different than spraying a car, tack coat, nother' coat and so on.
If you need the paint ( single part ) to cook off a little quicker then you can add some VM&P Naptha. Works miracles for that single part enamel to speed up your process and to hopefully keep critter's out of the finish - some anyway. Here is a little reading from the Interlux website on painting. Hope it might help you some with your frustrations:http://www.yachtpaint.com/usa//boat...lt.asp?ComponentID=20088&SourcePageID=7668#14

Are you sure they're 600MB?!? That's larger than anyone's going to want to download. PDF? Video?

Yep recorded in high res so one could see how the paint flattens by itself and then rolled in real time so each could judge for themselves,.......opps 417mb files lasting for about 3 mins each...

Re: Spraying Interlux and Enamel

Got busy yesterday at work and this thread took off...

For below the waterline I'm using brightsides, above the waterline is standard oil based gloss enamel that I had color matched to the boat. The brightsides is going on the transom and the enamel is going in the splashwell area, there are a bunch of ideas on here that I will give a try.

Spraying is my fallback because I can spray much better than I can brush, but I might try the penetrol and see how that helps with brushing...

Thanks all..

Would you mind emailing the files to me? wmason@pt-corp.com

I would greatly appreciate it. I am picking up my Brightside paint today and would like to review your work before starting the paint on my boat.

Thanks - Wes

Nothing to exciting its real time with 30 secs between vids just enough time to drop the old roller and pick up a new one.

That was the noisiest roller I have ever heard.
Nice though.

I think that TailGunner must have put a playing card in the spokes of that roller to keep us awake. :p

He was taking so long to roll it out I thought he was gonna wipe the paint right back up off that boat.

Had not thought about using the roller like that, I take it that you got some bubbles when you rolled it on and the second roller them removed them.

Good Stuff... Thanks for the vids...

Something else to tinker with if the storms pass this weekend... ;)

Exactly....it will take some time for the paint to get just a touch tacky and then you go go back and flatten the stipple with a roller...as to how long to wait time the vid about 3-4 minutes before you flatten it..Caution this can be done only one time so take your time and lift a little paint...:p
