If you don't have a "haz mat" style spray outfit don't even atempt it, it's way too dangerous. The roll and tip method is actually almost as fast with equally good results.

If you do have all the equipment, the supplier should have a data sheet with tip sizes, pressures ect. If not then the companies website should. Spraying isn't as easy as it looks if ya haven't tried it before ;) Either way always wear a respirator. If ya have no experience spraying, listen to Rocky. He speaks the truth :D You'll have a 200% better chance of having a nice paintjob with the roll and tip method if not experienced. Ship Shape TV had an excellent episode on how to roll and tip. You can buy the videos I think.

Take head here, Perfection has ingredient's that can really mess you up permentaly. You need a suit with it's own air supply...

Youll need a pot sprayer say a bink's with a .50 tip.

Basically, it's a 2 part polyurethane. The hazardous ingredient is cyanide. It's a very low percentage but still potentially harmful if inhaled as mist from a spray gun.

On the plus side, it's as glossy as glass, UV resistant, ignores gasoline and most chemicals, is VERY scratch resistant, and remains flexible on fiberglass. Application is newbie friendly, as it flows together smooth and is run resistant.

I did a classic '75 GMC motorhome in 2 shades of blue, gray & white with it using a Binks cup gun, turned out beautiful. 5 years later, it still looked exactly the same.

If there's a choice, choose the thinner with longer cure times, so that it blends together where you start & stop.

A disposable respirator WILL NOT fiter out the toxic ingredients in interlux. I would defintely warn against it. Tail_Gunner wasn't kidding.

You really need to read this:http://www.yachtpaint.com/USA/hotlinks/perfection_manual.pdf

On page 13 you will find your tip sizes. They will, and do vary from gun to gun. This is a forty page download so if you don't have a high speed connection hang in there. Might take a minute or two. Again, if you plan on using the Perfection - please download and read. :D

A disposable 3m resperator is good for 24 hours opened. The main ingredient in a true poly and most urathane paints is isocyanate, and yes its deadly . but if you spraying it out doors (not an enclosed building) and using a (new unopened resperator). you should be fine. Ive been doing auto and boat painting for 22 years now, I just talked to my paint rep and the rep from 3m... they agreed. I hope they are right, Or else I will be dying tomorrow

Re: spraying Interlux perfection paint

Back when I was trying to decide this subject I spoke with several folks about it both in here and guys I met through my job. The opinion that stood out most was a local boat refinisher and repair guy. He has an outstanding reputation around here. The trouble I had was that he is Asian and has a thick accent. Despite the language barrier he was very adamant about one point. Perfection is a paint that has to be applied using specific techniques to get a good result. An experienced applicator can apply it easily but there is a definite learning curve. He recommended rolling it. It would simply cost too much to get the equipment needed to spray it. And to buy the extra paint I would need to cover my mistakes.

He did not state this as clearly as I did here. I remember something like: You no paint sprayer, you roll, easy crew up, too mush windy, cost plenty. He had a good point, smart guy. He is my best friend now.:D

I have restored many boats over the years. Spraying or roller/tipping, if done right its about the same. Spraying is better if you work alone and time is an issue. If you are a shade tree mechanic and work out of your back yard. You should consider your neighbors when spraying a very toxic paint. Good luck

Note to self: Strike Perfection from the list of paints to use on the hard top project because it will show every imperfection and mistake I make in the fairing and prep. Maybe flat white Rustolium will work..... :D

With proper mask, I have used a simple 8oz. gravity gun thin it 20% with interluxs thinner. Keep a good brush close in case you over spray. Remember USE THE PROPER MASK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good luck
