I am getting ready to start my 20hp johnson in a barrel to see if fuel delivery is my problem for the motor not running for more than a few seconds. I was wondering, since I am having a hard time finding anything around the shop to use for a spray bottle, if I could just use some sea foam in the aerosol form (deep creep) to spray into the carbs when the motor starts to die to see if it keeps running or not. I guess question is, will it burn like gas enough to use for this test?

Read the label but I believe it says that it can be used like quick start.

It usually will stall the engine when spraying in the carbs.Use an old windex bottle or something similar.It will be fine for a one time use.Remember to use the oil mix and not straight gas.

No. Same as starting fluid, will not give the necessary lubrication. Use premixed fuel. Short of a spray bottle, look for even an old pop bottle, poking a hole in the cap with a straw, such as a wd 40 straw to spray with.

so WD40 will work but deep creep wont? the deep creep can says right on it that is can be used as a starting spray with lube.

Sorry, meant wd 40 straw, not wd 40.

Starting fluid says it can be used on the can as well, it is the main title. I still would not use it. I just dont see how 1 product can both lubricate the cylinders for starting and clean carbs of varnish at the same time?? I am by no means an expert though, that is just my own humble opinion.

But deep creep has lubrication in it where as quick start does not I believe. Sheez. Now you got me wondering. I'll have to go read BOTH labels now... Except they're out in the garage and it's -10c out! Rather keep watching Terminator!

well i just tried it, I dont know if it helped or not. I didnt notice any substancial differecne. The motor ran for probably 15 seconds though, before it finally slowly made an increase in rpm's and then died. Sometimes it makes an increase in rpm's and then dies, other times it just plain dies. And now it wont start, so I think I'll put some gas in the cylinders and try it. Can I unhook the fuel line on the far side of the fuel pump and crand the motor to see if it is pumping fuel?

Sounds like you should use real gas and oil mix.

Yes, just run it into a bottle or old can. You should get a good stream. If you add a thimble of pre mix into the cylinders it should run for a bit as well.

The can said exactly what you did Steve...I wonder.

You have a fuel delivery problem. When the fuel in the carb is used up, the mixture leans out and that will make the engine speed up for a few seconds. I have had this happen several times on various engins.

Get a vacuum gauge and hook it inline on the fuel hose before the engine, along with a clear section of hose. Take it for a spin, noting the readings and monitor the fuel flow through the clear hose.

Findings:

-Vacuum of less than 2 inches and air bubbles in the clear hose indicates an airleak into the fuel system
-No air bubbles and less than 2 inches indicates a bad fuel pump
-Vacuum over 4 inches indicates a restriction.

Both WD40 and Deep Creep used to have propellants that were highly flammable.WD40 no longer uses this sort of propellant and is useless as a starter fluid.Deep Creep,when sprayed into the carburetor is mostly useful as a decarbonizer.Try and spray it into the carbs of a running engine.First it will smoke really bad and then the engine will stall on you.
Just use regular mix and spray it into the carb mouth with a windex spray bottle.That will serve you best.

I looked at the sample vacuum tester thing on ebay and I am not sure I understand how to use it. Does the clear piece of hose go between the gauge and the original fuel line, or do you put it in line with the existing fuel line?
Let me do some explaining. Here is all I know. Carbs are completely rebuilt and clean, impeller is new, sompression is good, spark was good this fall (3/8 spark), it runs sometimes but only for maybe 15 seconds at the most. Sometimes it will start right up again, sometimes not. tonight it died and wouldnt start again. I put some fuel in the cylinders, and still nothing. I thought maybe I didn't get enough in the cylinders so I sprayed some sea foam in there as well, still nothing. Sometimes it acts like it tries, but wont start. So I got pissed and put it away for the night.
