i took my 140 evinrude looper to a mechanic to check for what appeared to be in intermittent no spark condition and he found that the head gaskets were both leaking water. the port one is weeping pretty profusely and the starboard is actually spitting water all over the coils and power pack. the bolts are also leaking.

have you ever heard of a head gasket leak this bad? and could this be the cause of my ignition failure? would water getting in the cylinders damage it? its leaking so bad i figure it must be leaking inside too.

the motor was rebuilt about 350 hours ago.

im going to pull the heads and replace them but i am concerned about possible damage. i wonder if i overheated it because he replaced the water pump and tstats and it runs way cooler.

i believe changing head gaskets on this thing is pretty easy? any special sealant?

Heads or covers leaking? Covers leak preety often and you don't need to pull heads to remove them. Just examine carefully.

No sealant with head gasket ... goes on dry and must be torqued, then retorqued after about 10 hours running time.
