I own a 1982 9.9 evinrude (E10RLCNS) with a rope start. Im working on the manual starter unit. I successfully replaced the rewind spring. There is what's called a spring retainer that is supposed to sit within the rewind spring.

Is there a certain way that the spring retainer should sit in there? I don't remember how it sits in there? What is the spring retainer's function? Any pictures of the orientation/direction of the spring retainer inside the rewind spring? Ive seen many diagrams of the manual starter unit but none that have helped. THANK YOU

Re: Spring Retainer 1982 9.9 Evinrude (pull Starter)

I'm having a little trouble with this too. My service manual doesn't go into it. I bought a new spring, which is a newer superceded number and the spring end may be updated.

I can't seem to fit this part in here. I think I can see what they are wanting to do with it but I'm a little iffy on bending that spring around so I can fit this retainer on.

The new spring is PN 338534.

I browsed that linked section and he didn't go into detail on it except that they started including a retainer in 79'. I have a diagram like the one linked but it doesn't really go into it either.

Anyone know if the new spring is updated and doesnt' require the retainer?

nevermind, got it.
I had my spring in there backwards.

I love it when somebody brings me these things in as a box of parts.
