Spun hub? but could it be? just changed oil

1963 Johnson 40hp, on 14' crestliner. Just changed lower unit lube yesterday. Filled from level(vent) hole instead of drain(fill) hole. Seemed to have a little leak, as it looked a little oily this morning. It has always been a little oily down there since I bought it about 5-6 years ago. First trip out this year. I also took a file and smoothed off my prop blades from previous years mild knicks, etc.

I took it out this morning and first think I noticed is that at trolling speeds it is ok, but as soon as I load it up it revs up with no acceleration, the "slipping tranny" feeling so widley refered to as. My prop is held on by a single pin that goes directly through it and the shaft. I know very little about outboards and from what I read, I get a basic understanding of "spun" prop. Is a "spun" prop possible with this setup? The only other thing I have done since last year is transfer some weight forward. I moved the fuel tank and battery from rear to the front.

Could it be low oil in lower unit? From leaking? I forgot to drain it before last winter in case there was water in it.

I just went out and looked at it again (still on boat) I am going to pull it off tomorrow. Only one hair pin and it comes right off. Anyways I guess there is a type of bushing or hub or something in there I believe. Anyways anyone reading this probably has a pretty good idea of what my problem(s) may be. Thanks in advance for any tips or info.

If I am rambling I am pretty tired from fishin in the wind today. Brought home 10 pickerel(walleye) average about 2.5-3 lbs. Good eatin!

Spun props have internal bushings and are on through hub exhaust systems.

I think you have a shear pin just behind the nose cone, which you probably have snapped.

Take the cotter pin out and take off the nose cone. You will find that there is a hole through the flared front of the prop with a cylindrical post running though it and the propeller shaft. It is designed to break on impact to prevent damage to the gears.

The original OMC part # of the shear pin was 304,575.

You cannot properly fill the gearcase from the top. You must take out both plugs and force the oil up from the bottom until it runs out from the top, then replace the top screw first.

I'm jealous of your fishing success, too much wind to get out here today.

Evening Sparkadelic.

If that's a manual lower unit you have there rather than an electric one, it's impossible for the gearcase to 'slip'. If it's an electric one, then simply using the wrong oil can cause it to slip. The electric shift uses pushbuttons to select the gear, where the mechanical one uses a linkage to a shift lever on the left of the engine.
The pin drive props also have a rubber hub between the part that the blades are cast into and the part that the pin indexes onto. If you look really close at the end of the prop, you can see the seam. To prove to yourself that your hub is slipping you can mark the hub against the housing (blade part) and run it. If the mark does not line up with the mark on the housing after you run, your hub is clearly slipping. A competant prop shop can repair a spun prop for less than a new one.

Good luck!

The oil leaking from the lower unit could have messed the hub up, yes it is possible, if you look at the prop the center that slides on the prop shaft is connected to the out hub by a rubber bushing that is what has let go, it is there to protect your lowerunit from shocks of hitting rocks and such with the prop, you need to take it to a prop shop and get it rehubbed, or replace the prop. Wow some quick replies! ezeke that is exactly what it is like.

You know come to think of it, we just got out and my engine quit. we drifted into shore and I realized that the connector to the fuel tank wasn't locked on and had popped off. Clipped it on and away we went but we were real close and when we got it running I was backing and we hit something cause it killed motor and we felt it. I just figured the prop would spin real easy if shear pin "sheared" When I manualy turn it by hand it is not super easy as if it was free wheeling. Should it feel super easy if shear pin goes? Like I said we idled around all day with very little problems. I am going to go pull it off tonight.right now.

Thanks again will try to keep updated.

The shear pin would have been a cheap easy fix, unfortunately it is fine. I did find a little chunk/ball of rubber in there though. Spun I would have to assume at this point. Thank you so much for the help.

OK, just be sure to fill that gearcase from the bottom (and use the right oil if it is electric shift).

Bedtime for me!

Manual shift. Going to probably get new seals for the 2 screws and refill before our weekend adventure with "the boys". I have 1.5 weeks and then 10 of us and 4 boats are going up north for our annual trip. I also got a stupid 10 year high school reunion the weekend before....at the lake mind you....maybe that will be where I try the new (to me) prop.

Thanks again.

Said i would update. I got new hub pressed into my old prop today, 2 minutes at the fix it shop. If anyone is searching and finds this post it cost me $35 for the hub and the shop charged me $25 labour, $68.01 with PST and GST. This is the only place I could find in Saskatoon that would do it. Crazy for how easy it was. They said they usually charge a min. 1/2 hour labour, which would have been $35 but I guess because I was there and like I said I was in and out in about 5 min. total they only dinged me $25. I wont complain.

Just to add 1 thing. If anyone else cares. When/if I ever need to do it again, I would get a hub and do it myself. All they did was use a hydraulic press to press it back in. Anyone with a small press could do it. Just for curiousity, does anyone know where I could order a hub online? Curious of prices.

Sounds like they charged you to much, gads around here in Okla you can get a prop rebuilt blades and all for $50, hub only for $25 to $35, think i would look around for another prop shop. Glad you got it fixed, happy fishing.

Bass Runner
Don't forget there is a difference in Canadian dollars versus the Greenback. One US dollar is about $1.34 Canadian. So $65 can is about 50 us.
