Spun Hub Causes

Hello...been a long time. I am wondering what causes a spun hub. Is it always the fault of the construction of the prop or is there something having to do with the motor that can cause it? I have an Evinrude 25 hp, mid 80's model and I changed the prop to a stainless one. It's an OMC 10 inch 12 pitch if I'm not mistaken. At any rate, it's the one the manual called for. I bought the stainless one last year and ran it once for about an hour total. When I shut it off to fish and restarted, the hub was spun. I took it back and the dealer replaced it. Now, yesterday, the second time it was run since the new prop was put on, I have the same scenario. Ran it for an hour or so, shut it off and get the same result, motor revs but speed doesn't increase. Feels like another spun prop. I have been in deep water, no stumps, no sand bars, haven't hit anything. Does anyone have a clue as to what is happening here? Thanks and sorry for the longwindedness.

i know that gasoline used to affect prop hubs but have since been reworked maybe you got old stock

FYI - A couple of years back I took a SS prop in to be rehubbed. The shop called me and told me that there was a manufacturing defect in the casting that resulted in a cracked hub and it would not hold a new hub.

I know that the last rehub I got they told me to run the engine in gear at idle speed for 5 minutes to seat the hub. I'm guessing that the the heat from the through-hub exhaust has something to do with it. Maybe if your hub is in fact spun you need to seat the next one it at idle.

When you first bought it ,was it new?Sounds like a prop that's been rehubbed a few times and there's something amiss with the fit.I mean.how much torque does a 25 hp put on a 10" or 12" prop.Did the supplier give you a new one out of the box?Somethings not right with those props and slow break-in has nothing to do with it IMO.

Might also check the condition of the propshaft splines for wear.I've never personally had excessive lash issue with the prop hub and shaft splines but it's worth a look.

If you still have your old one put it on and see how it works. At least you will know it is the prop.
