Engaging gears is a snap-move. Not a soft, calm thing as a car. Firm & quite fast. This is beacuse the gears are directly engaged without a cluth to disengage power while shifting.

If your gear move in and out like that, you should experience a clunck from engage and a 'brake' (like cutting throttle off) when it disengages. If it tries to run on gearwheel edges you would hear whining teeth noise.

A thought: How is your reverse?

i hate to tell you this but i think you have to drop the lower unit and open it up as i do belive you have a cluch pin broke and changing lube would not show you this as the gears wouldnt be really turning to chew up :( hope this helps you

is the exhaust going through your propeller?
If so ensure that all of the exhaust goes there.
I have experienced the same problem with an old merc. The propeller and the gear housing had to much clearance.Hope you understand what i mean, english is not my language.

50: I had the same problem with your motors cousin, a Chrysler, I pulled the l/u and laid it out as per the manual. Everything was there but the thrust washer. I don't know where it went but after installing a new one my troubles were over.

There is no way a newby can work on these motors without a manual. I don't know what you paid for the 50, but it's surely worth another 20 bucks.

Happy Boating, Hal

If I were you, I'd get a manual and study it real good before I asked anymore questions on this board.

c/6

Hooty

Good possability, huh, Joe? I'll give him the beifit of the doubt, but there aint much more TO a 50HP Force l/u that hasn't been addressed. Unless he got a bad hub job,the spline is stripped, or the prop is pushing air.
He would hear a gear failure, and it would grenade shortly after the noise was heard, never to idle forward again. But I'm following THIS one
Do lettuce know what u find,50HP.
On my 50HP Force, my brother was allways spinnig-out the hub. When I bought the boat,I figured I would have the same problem....Only once, and it was my fault (tried to idle-thru 1 foot of mud to get to one of my bass spots).
I never did figure out why my brother had so much trouble with them iether, and all I know is,he swore up n down,he never ran-aground, and the blades bore that out (pristine, and still painted)
so beatz me.

just got on and read what you have been asking anyway back to your problem on a 50hp force you have two gears on the spline from the front goining back is foward, cluch dog, reverse.the cluch dog has a pin going through the middle the cluch dog rides back and forth on this pin to engage your gears. hope this helps you  :)

Re: Spun Prop? i doubt it something is still slipping!!!!!

My buddy's motor did this and it was a "spun" prop. The motor is 42 years old but just like new since he didn't use it much and he took really good care of it. On examination, we could see the space in the paint that had formed when the prop failed. A used prop from the marine junk yard ($90.00) worked fine. I thought that was excessive but he was thrilled to get off that light. Now we're fishing again, maybe for another 42 years.
