My 2004 Suzuki DF140 starts sputtering and surging when I get it over 3000 rpms. I had the same problem last September and I drained the fuel rail and VST and it solved the problem. When I tried to drain the VST this time nothing came out. Should the VST be full of fuel?

the vst tank should always be full of fuel.
you might have gunk in it so the drain could be clogged .

disconect the fuel hose that comes from the high pressure fuel filter.
while turning the key in the on position(not cranking) the high pressure fuel pump should be running for a moment pumping fuel out the high pressure filter.
try to get a sample from there because thats whats inside your fuel rail injectors.

let me know what you got.

be careful to catch the fuel it might squirt al over the place.

Re: Sputtering Suzuki DF140

I went down to the boat today and pulled off the VST tank and cleaned it. There was a lot of crap in the tank that looked almost looked like sand was in it. I let it soak in carb cleaner for about an hour until all the build up was gone. I replaced the needle valve and filter when I was in the tank. When I was putting it back together I dropped on of the spacers for the fuel rail overboard so I could not finish the job. Hopefully I will get that part this week and my problems will be solved. I will let you know what happens.

I'm having a similar problem... What is the VST tank?

I'm having a mid to high speed surge. Idles pretty well. This happened after running completely out of gas. Changed the low psi filter/water separator last night but no change.

I will do the high psi test. What about the high psi filter? Should I check/change that? Thanks, C.
