Spybot question

Just a quick question to see if anyone knows for sure. I was told spybot search and destroy was not free anymore. It's free to download and run but to fix errors you have to buy it now like some of the other big boys on the market. I don't use spybot anymore as SBN (I think) put me on to Spysweeper which is far superior but after 30 days you have to buy it( it's well worth it). Does lots more than spybot. Is spybot still free and I got wrong information?

Re: Spybot question

Still free, but I had to blow it out of my main computer. It was apparently the cause of a continual reboot problem I was having. Every other time I clicked on a new link or hit the back button my computer would reboot. Still use it in the other 4 computers.

Re: Spybot question

In many cases I run Spybot, Ad-Aware, MS AntiVirus, Spyware Guard and Spyware Blaster all on the same machines. And if the machine is running a version of McAfee which has spyware protection I turn that on also. More protection is better, and no one tool even comes close to being adequate all by itself if you're connected to the net. All of these tools have a somewhat different approach, and all approaches are necessary since all will certainly miss something. MUST keep all these updated frequently, too. I've more than once seen a machine with these infested with newer malware because the tools were not updated & used properly. All these tools get along with each other, and all but McAfee are free. Beware many of the other "free" spyware removal tools which may remove the other spyware but open the door wide to their sponsor's spyware & hijackers- making a bad situation worse.

Yeah, Bearcat has it down. You really need a smorgasbord of algorithms before your begin to even get close to getting what your machine needs. There is no 'one' piece of s/w that does it. And like he said, you gotta keep it all updated, too.

Re: Spybot question

I agree...I run Adaware, Spybot & Spyware Doctor but none of them seem to find much since I started using the firewall. Helps a lot.

Also, you may want to consider switching your browser from Internet Explorer to Firefox. It is MUCH better, more secure, and is legitimately free! I switched and my adware and spyware dropped dramatically. www.mozilla.org is where you download it.
